Abstract

Voice controlled lighting system operates with the principle of voice recognition technology with the ability to decode and interpret human voice. Amazon Alexa voice assistant and the NodeMCU microcontroller, which possesses inherent Wi-Fi capability for data communication, were integrated to implement the voice-controlled lighting system. A rechargeable 12v battery was used as power source and relays were used as switches to the loads. Voice commands were processed via Amazon Alexa cloud services and transmitted over Wi-Fi to the NodeMCU, which actuates relay-controlled lighting loads. Performance evaluation of the developed system was conducted through repeated voice command tests under controlled network conditions and the results showed an average response time of 1.2–2.6 seconds depending on network strength, with a control accuracy of approximately 96%. The work led to the development of a system which simplifies and automates the task of switching various lighting systems through simple voice commands thereby eliminating the need for users to perform traditional tasks of pressing buttons. The system successfully controlled three independent lighting zones (representing living room, kitchen, and bedroom respectively) with reliable response under stable network conditions. The design offers a low-cost, scalable, and practical solution for smart home automation using readily available IoT components.
