Abstract

This study examined the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Nigeria, focusing on the relationship between government policy frameworks, public awareness, funding, and the effective achievement of the SDGs. A cross-sectional survey research design was adopted to provide a snapshot of the current status and challenges of SDG implementation. A structured questionnaire was designed and administered to a sample of 133 respondents drawn from relevant stakeholders involved in or knowledgeable about SDG activities in the study area. Data collected were analyzed using SPSS? (provide meaning) version 27, which facilitated the presentation of demographic characteristics, response frequencies, and percentages across key variables. To test the hypotheses, a one sample t-test was employed to determine the significance of relationships between government policies, public awareness, funding, and SDG implementation outcomes. The findings revealed a significant positive relationship between government policy frameworks and the effective implementation of the SDGs, indicating that robust policies are crucial for progress. Public awareness and participation were also found to have a significant positive effect on the achievement of SDGs, highlighting the importance of educating and engaging the populace. Conversely, inadequate funding was identified as a significant challenge adversely affecting SDG implementation, underscoring the need for sufficient financial resources to sustain development projects. In conclusion, the study established that government policies and public engagement are key drivers for successful SDG attainment, while funding constraints remain a major hindrance. The findings emphasize the need for improved policy frameworks, enhanced public awareness campaigns, and increased funding allocation to accelerate SDG progress in Nigeria. Recommendations include strengthening governance structures, expanding educational outreach, and mobilizing resources from both public and private sectors to overcome existing barriers. This research contributes valuable insights for policymakers, development practitioners, and stakeholders aiming to enhance sustainable development efforts in Nigeria.
