Abstract

In recent years, there has been a steady surge in Monkey pox virus infection as well as attendant morbidity and mortality especially in African countries including Nigeria. There is little documentation on the effect of educational intervention on monkey pox in Nigeria. This study aims to assess the effect of educational intervention on the knowledge and perception of Monkey pox infection among post-secondary schools in Akure South LGA, Ondo State. The study adopted a cross-sectional descriptive study with a sample size of 180 respondents using simple random sampling techniques. Data was obtained from the respondents using a self- administered questionnaire and the data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi-Square. Result post-intervention, the result showed an increase in knowledge from 42.3 to 81.3% (P< 0.042), and perception risk rose from 38.6 to 68.7% (P<0.033). Also, Chi-square test revealed significant relationship exists between knowledge of monkeypox infection and perception of risk among respondents (x2 = 1485.94; p-value= 0.034) In conclusion, the study shows that educational intervention influenced the participant knowledge and risk perception of monkey pox, therefore the study recommends that government through the Ministry of Health should intensify efforts through the various channels to educate the public about the virus infection, while health researchers should discover an effective vaccine for the infection.
