As urban populations grow, waste management systems struggle to keep pace, leading to environmental and public health risks. Rapid population growth and increased waste generation exacerbate these challenges, especially in areas relying on inefficient manual collection and disposal methods. This research introduces a solar-powered smart waste bin with automated lid opening and fill-level detection. The system integrates hardware, software, and sensors to monitor waste levels and send SMS alerts when the bin is nearly full. A prototype was deployed at the Faculty of Engineering, Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igboora, Nigeria, where it was tested for performance and user acceptance. Results showed an average fill level of 80%, 95% sensor accuracy, and high reliability in lid automation. User feedback was positive, with high adoption rates and strong engagement. This study contributes to smart city initiatives, highlighting the potential of IoT technologies in improving waste management and offering valuable insights for urban planners and policymakers.
